A new exhibition at Craft NI’s gallery combines cutting edge design and recycled vintage furniture.
The collaboration between up and coming craftspeople and an artist network that transforms forgotten chairs and tables has resulted in a stunning eclectic collection showcasing the best of old and new.
‘Making Christmas Special’ dramatically showcases the work of some of the most talented young makers in Northern Ireland and the intricately painted furniture of the Belfast-based ReFound group.
The new show, which is now open, gives the public the chance to see and buy something handmade and unique. Everything, including the furniture is for sale and prices range from £7 to £650.
The work features a range from jewellery to woven throws, ceramics, glass work, knitwear and canvas pictures. The organisers have catered for all tastes from trendy jewellery suitable for teenagers to hand-woven fabrics for older customers.
It has been put together by first time curator and young textile artist, Jenny Haslett, who said: “The aim is to display these unique, handmade items in a different light, showing the relationship between the artwork and the furniture. I wanted it to be like a shop rather than a formal exhibition.”
The Director of Craft NI, Joe Kelly said the exhibition had produced an interesting marriage of cutting edge design and recycled household items.
“These makers have adopted a multi-faceted approach, combining different levels of making from highly skilled, handmade work to creatively restyled furniture,” he added.
The Making Christmas Special exhibition runs until December 16 at the headquarters of Craft NI, Cotton Court, 42 Waring Street, Belfast. For more information visit www.craftni.org
